EPO data is collected through ACLED and sourced in English, Amharic, Afan Oromo, and Tigrinya. The ACLED-EPO dataset contains thousands of historical data points drawn from local, national, and international sources, with new real-time data added each week. The Region has borders with Eritrea in the northeast, Tigray Region in the northwest, Oromia Region in the southwest, Somali Region in the south, and Djibouti to the east. The Afar Region is divided into five administrative Zones and 30 Woredas. This Region is predominantly occupied by the Afar ethnic group (92%) who mostly engage in agro-pastoralist activities. In the Afar culture, clans are important social and political units. Read more Amhara The Amhara Region in general has experienced little of the violence that has been occurring across the rest of the country. While the Region contains similar elements in terms of conflicting political dynamics including rising ethno-nationalism and violent territorial agenda, Amhara ethno-nationalists have been placated due to recent events that have placed them in a position of favor in the national spectrum. Read more Benshangul / Gumuz The Benshangul/Gumuz Region lies on Ethiopia’s western border with Sudan, and shares internal borders with Amhara and Oromia Regions. The Region hosts Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and has been the site of intense ethnic killings throughout the past year. Read more Gambela Peoples Region Gambela Region is located in southwestern Ethiopia, bordered by South Sudan in the west, Oromia Region in the northeast, and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR) in the southeast. The capital city is Gambela. It is estimated that in 2017 Gambela Region’s population was approximately 400,000 1 Central Statistical Agency, 2013 , and the Region has four administrative Zones: Agnewak-Zone, Nuwer-Zone, Mezhenger-Zone, and Etang Special Zone. The Region shares borders with the Afar Region, Oromia Region and Dire Dawa to the West, Djibouti to the North, de facto state Somaliland to the North-East, Somalia from East to South, and Kenya to the South-West. The Region is predominantly inhabited by the Somali ethnic group, but it is ethnically heterogeneous. Read more SNNPR Ethiopia’s Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) is the most diverse in the country, containing dozens of ethnicities and language groups. This generates a unique political dynamic that, while reflective of larger nationalistic trends, tend to remain more localized and does not spread across the region as conflicts in the more ethno-homogeneous regions of the country do.
